A legendary music director
duo whose collective journey spans over 54 years, Laxmikant–Pyarelal have
created waves in Bollywood. A career which first started in the 1960s, their
names have become synonymous with music and has never ceased to amaze ever
since. And who better than Javed Akhtar to take viewers on a ride through
Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s illustrious career?! This weekend, Zee Classic with its
proposition ‘Woh Zamana Kare Deewana’, will highlight the many highs and few
lows of Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s musical career in Bollywood on a special episode
of Classic Legends Season 4 to air on Sunday 22nd October 2017 at
7:00 PM.
Both Laxmikant and Pyarelal
led a humble lifestyle during their childhood and were drawn to music at an
early age. In fact, the duo first met over a game of cricket at Ranjit Studios
in Mumbai. Their interaction thereon led to the birth of Laxmikant–Pyarelal, an
iconic duo, as they took viewers on an awe inspiring musical expedition!
While Laxmikant-Pyarelal
has composed music for over 635 films and 3810 songs, their first film together
was Parasmani. All the songs of the film gained immensely popularity,
especially Hasta Hua Noorani Chehra. What ensued
thereon was a chain of hits like Dosti, Milan, Dream Girl,
Saudagar, Mr. India and so on. Some of their hit compositions that people
reminisce even today include Mere Mehboob Qayamat Hogi,
Sawan Ka Mahina, Chitthi Aayi Hai, and Kaate Nahi Kat-te.
Charging half the prevalent
rate in the industry, Laxmikant-Pyarelal were indebted to their mentors Lata
Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi who supported them and worked with them despite
shoestring budgets. “For the film Bobby, when the stalwart director Raj
Kapoor heard their composition, he bowed down to them in respect. In fact, he
even said that Goddess Saraswati dwells within them,” recalls Javed Akhtar.
Their dedication and passion towards their art transformed them from mere music
directors to a ‘habit’ for leading directors and producers in their time.
What was the magic
behind their successful compositions? How were their lives on the personal
front?
